There can be no doubt that the Andy Murray effect is helping Scottish Tennis clubs to attract more members and that the game is set to thrive here for many years to come.

Andy’s first Grand Slam is surely set to encourage a huge number of people to take up or get more serious about the game, but with that comes a lot of pressure for many small tennis clubs to maintain their courts to the highest standards whilst still having to work within the constraints of small budgets and part time staff for the most part.

To be acceptable to players and to give improving players the best chance to develop their skills, the Institute of Groundsmanship states that a tennis court should ideally be:

  • even and smooth throughout, with no undulations or depressions
  • well firmed so as to provide a consistent ball bounce and pace
  • covered with a uniform dense sward of desirable grasses that have good root density and depth
  • weed free to ensure no adverse effect on ball rebound.

To achieve these performance standards consistently a lot of work has to be carried out on the court, not only to move towards and maintain this standard, but also to keep up with wear and tear and recovery from previous play.

This means that the average grass court needs a comprehensive year round maintenance plan that includes the following:

  • Regular mowing at varying heights of cut with an always sharp mower
  • Various types of aeration throughout the season and especially through the closed season which will include activities such as:Regular setting up of posts and nets and the dismantling of these for maintenance
    • Slit tine aeration for compaction relief
    • Solid tine aeration to improve surface uniformity and sub surface air content
    • Sarrell rolling to keep the turf receptive to water and to increase natural thatch breakdown by soil borne micro-organisms
  • Top-dressing to maintain surface uniformity, smoothness and pace
  • Over seeding to improve sward composition and to compensate for wear and tear at baselines and other high wear areas.
  • Re-turfing of base lines from time to time
  • Fertiliser applications throughout the year including granular and liquid products
  • Regular rolling of the surface with varying weights of roller to keep the court smooth and consolidated
  • Scarification, Verti-cutting and Verti-grooming to maintain a uniform surface, boost soil air content and minimise thatch
  • Drag-brushing and Switching to keep the surface dry and free from debris such as worm casts and to reduce problems with turf diseases
  • Irrigation to maintain deep rooting and a smooth, uniform growth pattern
  • Repair work during play
  • Pesticide application including weed killers, fungicides, insecticides, wetting agents and moss killers.

This is just a taste of what your groundsman has to deal with, but much of this work is difficult to achieve on a small budget and without specialised equipment.

Unfortunately much of the specialised equipment needed to make this work possible is used for just a small part of the year making ownership a luxury beyond the reach of many clubs.
