Free Winter Maintenance Report

Frosty leafWell, I don’t want to tempt fate, but it feels like autumn has started from where I am writing this and that means its time we turned our attention to the needs of our greens in the autumn and winter. As always we aim to provide you with the best advice in a timely manner and although we  hope you have many warm days left to enjoy this season we’ve published an updated Special Winter Maintenance Report. In this comprehensive free report we cover all of the essential maintenance required to ensure your green comes through the winter well and is in top condition when the new season comes around. The report covers a lot of ground and goes in depth to solve all of the problems that cause greens to play badly; here are just some of the issues covered:

Insects: the wet summer has caused a proliferation of insect problems; we are seeing a lot of chafer grub and leatherjacket activity at the moment and these insect pests can devastate a bowling green in a very short space of time.

LDP: Localised Dry Patch, although not very visible on many greens during the latter part of this season, it is still prevalent and will cause a lot of greens to become uneven and bumpy if we get a dry spring.

Compaction: Although a perennial problem that needs constant attention, the wet summer has exacerbated the problem of compaction; we are seeing a lot of bare and skinned heads due to compaction and the shallow rooting and wear associated with it.

Thatch: With increased compaction comes increased thatch, the number one cause of heavy, slow greens and a major attractor of insect pests and fungal diseases such as Fusarium.

We look at the causes and solutions of these and other issues such as head skinning, bare patches, winter turf nutrition, moss and worm control and we lay out a comprehensive plan of attack for ensuring your green is in top condition for opening day in 2010.

I hope you find our report very useful, and welcome any comments, questions or suggestions you might have.
